Things heard on the street:

“It’s the end of the world as we know it, HEH!” A nutter, that sounded very much like James Brown, walking past my building.

“It’s all fun and games ‘til the wings fall off.” I have no idea what the context was, but I am going to use that in a sentence today.

“No, you cannot have pork chops, it’s Thursday.” Is there some kind of rule against pork on Thursday?

So today has been busy with meetings. One of my bosses has a love of meetings. As clichéd as it sounds he really does have meetings about meetings, debriefs he calls them. I think he does it to make himself feel better about the fact that he actually does nothing except the budgets. And apparently that takes him 12 months to sort out. Today’s meeting actually had a 22-page power point presentation for us to follow along with. Twenty-two pages of graphs, bullet points and flow charts to tell us that we are on track for the year. That is an hour and a half that I can’t get back.

He is one of those guys that read, “seven habits of highly effective people,” and it changed his life. He recommended it to P who read chapter one and proclaimed it “a load of shite.” He is also a big fan of the buzzwords like, “the way forward is…” “We just don’t have the bandwidth…” and the one that makes me want to jam my thumbs in my eyes and jump out the window, “we need to think outside the box.” During his meetings a game of buzzword bingo is often played. I created a sheet that has his top twenty phrases on it and when you hear one you simply cross it off. P and I decided that we should start making up buzzwords to see if he would start using them. Something like, “what we need here is physical fusion.”

I also had to interview someone today. I hate doing that because I never know what to ask people. The girl I interviewed today was nice enough but three times she mentioned that she basically did nothing and still got paid for it. Yeah, you should come work for us. You can just sit at a desk we will provide and surf the web or make personal phone calls. On second thought, that is my job.
