2004-09-01 - 9:44 a.m. This is going to be the week from hell. Not only do I have to contend with 3000 Republicans, 250,000 protestors, back from vacation emails… it is the week before the Spring fashion shows. In my office building there are no less than five, count ‘em five, modeling agencies. Twice a year we have to contend with what I call the MODEL BOMB. You can be standing there waiting for the elevator, feeling good about yourself then in walks a girl who is at least 7 inches taller than you and 50 pounds thinner. Then to top it all off, they are about 18 years old. Elina calls them the giraffes. Over the years, what was thought of as beautiful has changed. Once it was all the rage to have a big ol’ butt. An hourglass figure used to be something to behold. When did being a genetic freak become the ideal? Some of these girls are so beautiful that you can’t stop staring at them, and others are so weird looking that you have to wonder how they got this gig in the first place. I am neither fat nor short, but next to these girls I am a fat midget… with no sense of style. I am not one of these crazy feminists that disapprove of magazines that highlight thin, young models. I don’t think it perpetuates self-image issues and promotes eating disorders (that is another entry altogether). I just don’t want to be reminded that I will never find myself sashaying down the runway in Marc Jacobs show. Is that wrong? Can the protestors of the convention take a break please? Holy cats! Clearly there is a lot to protest these days. There are a whole host of issues on the Republican platform that I am just not down with. But don’t you think protesting in NYC is a little like preaching to the choir? New York is a Democrat’s state. I can understand the significance of trying to convert those sheep that have wondered into our fair city to support Bush… but do you think that shutting down the traffic and slowing the commute of the people that live here is the best method for getting your point across? You are basically just pissing us off. Apparently there have been over 1000 arrests already… this shindig just got underway. Does anyone else think that is a bit much? There has been violence with the police. Protestors knocking cops off scooters, trying to rip their faces off, throwing punches. Correct me if I am wrong, but if you are holding a “No War” sign… there shouldn’t be any violence from your end. In fact, you are just making it harder for Kerry to make his case. Acting like a bunch of 4 year olds that haven’t gotten their way is not helping elect a better president. I just think that protesting during this convention is futile. Do you honestly think that as a Republican delegate walks into Madison Square Garden he is going to convert? “Wait! Are you saying that we are at war because of Bush? Oh man, I have got to get with you guys. That is bullshit.” What is the overall objective here? Is it to make the Republicans aware? Make New Yorkers aware? Get your picture in the paper? Make a difference? The 60’s are over… let it go. Now take your stinky assed, dreadlocked, granola eating, hemp wearing self and go down to Texas and protest there, see how well you fare preaching to those Republicans. They won’t put up with your bullshit… and they have guns. Holy cats… I must have had an opinion! 0 comments so far
